Roland Martin Asks: How Do We Get Bad Teachers Out Of the Classroom

December 20, 2011

I came across this video clip of Roland Martin interviewing Randi Weingarten, head of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).  The first question Roland asks Randi is the one posted on the title of this writing.

Do I think that there should be “bad teachers” in classrooms?  In general my answer is no.  But the entire premise of this question bothers me.  Why should teachers be any different from say, doctors, lawyers, policemen, firemen, nurses, ditch-diggers, morticians, grounds-keepers, car-mechanics, etc, etc, etc…

My point is that not EVERYONE in a profession is perfect!  It is mathematically impossible to have every single person be an outstanding teacher and we are the only profession where this mantra is even floated around.  To make matters worse it seems that Weingarten agrees with the premise.  Watch the clip and decide for yourself.
