Reconnecting McDowell

December 18, 2011

I just watched this fascinating 14 minute video on McDowell County West Virginia.  It is about how coal mining job losses over the past 30 years have basically blighted the area, and how this impacts students and schools.  A video like this makes you feel good about being a teacher because it gives you a chance to see how much your help can impact a child’s life.

Many times we as teachers feel frustrated because of our tremendous workloads, students who give us headaches, administration who is concerned with the almighty test scores, and so many other issues.  But, if you sit back and watch this video, and think about your impact on students, you will feel like you can make a difference in their lives.

If you are not a teacher, this is still an excellent video to watch, and it might prompt you to do something nice for someone today.
